Married persons who file separate returns must be consistent in claiming the standard deduction or itemizing deductions. If one spouse itemizes deductions, the other spouse must itemize deductions and cannot claim the standard deduction.
You can take a dependency exemption for the full year for a child if the child is born on or before December 31 . . . Plan accordingly!
You should consider filing separate returns whenever the medical expenses of either spouse substantially exceeds those of the other spouse. A greater percentage of the medical expenses may be deductible due to the reduction in the income hurdle.
